I. The Augustan Poets

1.      If Shakespeare identified himself so strongly with Ovid (43 BC – 17 AD), didn't he then neglect Vergil (70-19 BC) and Horace (65-8 BC), the other two great Augustan poets? Before we can answer this question, the gematric values of the three poets should be examined. Each name is tripartite, consisting of first name (praenomen), family name (nomen gentilicium) and nickname (cognomen):

We can see that the NS+FS of all three poets are divisible by 10. This characterises them as experienced in the decimal system and the art of gematric text construction. There are many more remarkable results:

2.      Vergil's names produce the most harmonious values: The average numeric and factoral value (NV/FV) per letter is 21, there are three ratios: 165:255 = 15*(11:17), 72:90 = 18*(4:5), 162:420 = 6*(27:70).

The NS+FS of Horace's and Ovid's names are complementary against Vergil's names as both sums 470+370 = 840 mean the average sum 420 of Vergil. The number of letters are complementary, too: 22+18 is average 20 like Vergil's letters. So the average NV+FV remains 21.

3.      The NS+FS of the cognomina is 520, of the other two names 740, their ratio is 20*(26:37). 52 refers to the elements of four hexagonal double-triangles and two double-rhombi which, put in a cross of rectangular axes, can be shaped to an octahedron.

The ratio 26:37 represents the elements of three successive levels of the tetractys:

4.      The total NS 773 and FS 487 are prime numbers. 773 refers to 7 hexagonal and 7+3 tetractys points:

This concentric aspects of points represents the area ratio 1:3 of the two concentric circles of the hexagram which is of fundamental trinitarian relevance.

487 is relatable to the double rhombus, which consists of 4 triangular areas, 8 lines of the frame and 7 points. The 2 cross lines dividing the triangles are not included.

5.      The NS+FS 1260 = 6*21*10 has to be associated with the elements of 6 double rhombi two of which can be fitted to form an octahedron.

The difference between the FS 487 and the NS 773 is 286 = 2*11*13. The number 13 refers to the elements of a hexagonal double triangle, out of which develop two rhombi consisting of 11 elements as the hexagon is extended to the figure of hexagram:

The difference 286 is repeated as FV1-sum so that two double rhombi can be converted into an octahedron.

6.      The FV1/2-sum 516 contains in its product 12*43 the digits 1 to 4 the sum of which is 10 and so is a manifestation of the decimal system.

The two FV1/2- sums 286 and 230 can be added to their referential sums 733 and 487, from which result 1059 = 3*353 and 717 = 3*239. The two sums can be related mainly to the diametrical zizag line of the double rhombus, both serving to represent the trinitarian ratio 1:3 of the two concentric circles. The numbers 3 and 5 are radial elements of the hexagonal circle and the outer circle:

The midpoint of the left figure has to be counted twice. The right figure shows the same area ratio represented by the diametrical elements 5:(5+2+2).

The factor 3 of both products give evidence of three double rhombi within the hexagram.

7.      The total result 1776 = 48*37 = 2*8*111 has to be explained from the general mathematical rule of 6 inversions of 3-digit numbers. The three single digits must have the sum 8. Two 3-digit numbers come into question: 134 and 125. The first has to be given priority as it refers to the points of two rhombi. Again the midpoint has to be counted twice:

The 6 inversions and their FV are:

The factor 113 is a contraction of the two numbers 11 and 13. The prime number 151 renders the structure of points of the double rhombus. 17 is the number of elements of a fishlike figure of the double rhombus and the tetractys. The product 12*14 represents 26 elements of the octahedron.

The NS/FS-computation of the 6 inversions provides the following results:

1316 = 28*47

1316 refers to the frame of a cross of double rhombi, consisting of 13 points and 16 lines. The product 28*47 represents the 21 elements of the double rhombus: 2+8 lines, 4 triangular areas and 7 points:

The 4 FV-sums 1316 + 3value-sums 1003 (59*17) = 2319 amount to three times the initial NS 773, which in this way confirms its meaning of 1:3 ratio. The FV 777 points to the 7 elements of each tetractys side.

9.      The three poets were convinced of divine powers ruling the world and the fates of men. They attributed their poetic achievements and their insights into the mysteries of the numeric system to divine inspiration and guidance. So their names were rightly deemed worth being honoured by the Eternal Spirit and such sublime values as the human mind would never be able to design on its own.

II. Shakespeare Joining

1.      If we consider Shakespeare's knowledge of the gematric system and the meaning of numbers, we should not impose him any limitations. As to myself, I take two contrasting attitudes: On the one hand I consider my gematric knowledge as limited, but do my best to understand Shakespeare's thoughts and designs, on the other hand I put no limits to his religious aspirations and beliefs because it's the most sublime ideals that spur the individual on to accomplish the highest intellectual achievements.

2.      Only if Shakespeare was convinced that he was a chosen instrument to continue the high ideals of humanity which imbued the greatest Roman poets, could he dare to compare himself to them.

So let's suppose first that Shakespeare understood the gematric implications in about the way I proposed above, and then added his own values:

Shakespeare could see that, by adding his values, the NS 950 and FS 610 were divisible by 10, which completed what was realised before only with the round NS+FS results of the three name groups.

3.      The most striking result is that the NS+FS 1560 is divisible by 78, the number of letters of the now 11 names. Therefore the average NV+FV is 20, which relates to the points of two tetractyses.

78 = 3*26 refers to three octahedra which each consist of 26 elements.

4.      The NS+FS 126 of WILLIAM as one tenth of 1260 contains as it were the essence of the three Augustan poets.

5.      The FV1/2 sum 746 = 2*373 stands for two hexagrams consisting of 7 hexagonal points and twice 3 points for two tetractyses:

6.      The NS/FS-computation of the 4values reveals a similar pattern as with the Augustan poets:

1226 = 2*631; 665 = 5*7*19

The total sum 2574 is divisible by 78 like the NS+FS 1560. The ratio of the difference 1014:1560 is 78*(13:20). The two ratio numbers refer to 13 points of the hexagram and 20 points of two tetractyses.

The product numbers 11*13 = 143 resume the theme struck by the the 6 inversions of 134 and the number 286 = 2*11*13.

The prime number 631 renders the structure of tetractys points: 6+3 points of the frame and the midpoint.

7.      In adding his gematric values, Shakespeare's found one aspect to confirm and encourage his special love for the Virgin Mary: The ratio of the NS+FS 1260 of the three poets to his own 300 is 60*(21:5). It's about a play of letters I've dealt with elsewhere already: The equivalent letter for 21 is X but as its shape suggests, it can be represented by the first and last letters AV. The pre-Christian gematric system is laid down and concentrated in the term and deity VESTA. According to medieval theology the Virgin Mary was often called the second EVA who reversed the Fall of Man by responsing positively to the Angel's greeting AVE which is the Latin equivalent for what the angel really said. Thus the letters VA in both EVA and VESTA are exchanged for AVE. In this way Shakespeare can feel himself on the one hand as heir to the three poets' human ideals and on the other hand as connecting them, so to speak, to Christian salvation.

IV. MUSA and MARIA

1.      Considering Shakespeare's deep devotion to the Holy Virgin Mary, we can regard her as the female equivalent of the Muses whom the ancient poets would invoke for inspiration. Of course, the Blessed Virgin is not specialised on patronage for poets and other performers of arts but the universal patroness for all of God's children. Shakespeare's worldview is necessarily different from the Augustan poets' and so is his trust in heavenly protection. The two names MUSA and MARIA harmonize gematrically in several respects:

The FV1/2-sum 51 is identical with the NS 51 of MUSA. Even the partial sums are NS compositions of its four letters: 30+21 corresponds to MS+UA and 31+20 to MSA+U. Furthermore, 20+31 are NS-compositions of PENSATOR, the 8 different letters of the SATOR Square:

So MARIA leads the notion and ideal of MUSA to its completion.

The neigbouring numbers 19 and 18 refer to the elements of the tetractys: 10 points + 9 triangles and 18 lines.

The single digits represent of 148 the geometrical figure of square: 1 quadratic area, 4 lines, and 4*2 points to define each side of the square.

148 is the NS of the inner SATOR-Square if each side is counted separately:

The principle is that two sums are inserted into each other: the NS 64 of the corner letters plus the complete sum 84. The model for the two numbers is a coordinate system of two double rhombi one of which is numbered from 1-23 and the second from 1-24. If the two double rhombi are shaped into an octahedron, the 4 crosslines form its common basis consisting of 4 points and 4 lines:

The numbers of the crosslines count 84, their FV 64.

An octahedron consists of 26 elements, excluding the volume. If it is divided into two halves (= two pyramids), each consists of 17 elements, 8 elements of the basis and 9 elements of the pyramidal body (1 apex, 4 edges, 4 triangles).

The two aspects of the whole octahedron and its two halves is reflected in the difference between the FS and the NS of the two names:

In the graphic the left and lower axial arms (4 green letters) are shifted against the other two (blue letters) until they form a square. The tow groups of letters have the following values:

64 is the FS of the numbers 1-12 which is extended by the prime number 13 to 77. The equivalent letters for 12+1 are MA! The combination of twice 1 and once 2 refers to the area ratio 1:3 of the two concentric circles of the hexagram:

The ratio 1:3 reflects the unity of three trinitarian persons, in accordance with the teachings of Jesus Christ.

So we may understand another anagram: URSI MAI have urged the trinitarian God (to send the redeemer). The first-person statement can be related especially to the Virgin Mary, but also to the yearning prayers of all pre-Christian peoples.

The NS of the 5 shared (MA, MAA) and 4 separate letters (US, RI) is 27+64 = 91 = 3³+4³. 27 is the FS of the numbers 1-7, 64 of the numbers 1-12. 7 in turn is the FV of 12 = 3*4.

6.      As has become evident above, the addition of Shakespeare's 4values have led to the NS+FS 1560, divisible by 13, which is also the case with the four names. So another addition can be made:
